Garry has been involved in the Racing Industry in some capacity since he started a jockey apprenticeship with late New Zealand trainer Larry Wiggins at Warwick Farm in Sydney. Wiggins cut back his team so Garry transferred his indentures to John Fitzgerald and made the move from Warwick Farm to Brisbane in 1973. He won the Brisbane apprentice metropolitan riding title (1975-76). Increasing weight forced his retirement from the saddle. He had a brief stint as a racehorse trainer and also spent time as a cadet steward for the Queensland Turf Club. In July 2010 he fulfilled a long held ambition and was granted a Jockey Manager’s licence. Soon after he linked with champion rider Chris Munce and has formed an ongoing and extremely successful partnership with the lightweight jockey. Under Garry's Management Chris won the Group 1 Caulfield Cup and T. J. Smith Stakes and broke Mick Dittman's long standing record to win the Brisbane jockeys' Premiership.
